Adventure

Adventure BalloonOur "Adventure" unit is very exciting. In the past we used the hot air balloon as a symbol of adventure. To prepare for this unit, I found a wonderful Website which shares information about handcrafted hot air balloons and describes the adventures of ballooning. I sent an email message to one of the designers, Judy Woller, and asked permission to use the picture of her balloon for a reading project. Judy returned an enthusiastic "yes." I then projected a picture onto the classroom bulletin board, traced each section of the design, and numbered and color-coded each piece of the pattern. I made templates, and the students cut out pieces of different colors to correspond to the balloon design.

During the "Adventure" unit, students are required to read adventure novels of their choice. As a student finished reading an adventure novel, he/she shared the story with the class, and chose a colored piece to add to the balloon. Each piece was labeled with the title and author of the book read, and the student's name. This activity continued until the balloon design was completed. The students and I loved to watch the balloon develop as we read and enjoyed adventure stories.Adventure Balloon Final

Hot Air Balloon Update
(May 24, 2003)

All of the pieces of the hot air balloon are filled in, and the design is complete. The students have read very exciting adventure stories, and shared them with the class. Each piece of the balloon is labeled with the title and author of the book, as well as the name of the reader. We are very proud of our achievements!
