Fantasy

Imagination's DoorsThe "Fantasy" unit opens up a whole new world of imagination for the students. We read short stories which encourage creative thinking and introduce the students to a new genre. Students are taught to think beyond the literal meaning of text, as we read classical mythology, fables, and poems.

Students have an opportunity to participate in an exciting poetry activity. People of all ages enjoy looking at clouds because clouds playfully stimulate the imagination. Clouds Cloudssuggest a world of possibilities. As clouds constantly reshape themselves, so does imagination transform and rework some of our actual experiences and perceptions. As they participate in this poetry activity, students study pictures of clouds and create poems that express what the clouds suggest to them.

Pictures of clouds can be viewed on the "Clouds" page of this site (click on the picture of the cloud above). As the students create poems, the poems will be posted along with the clouds that inspired them.

As part of this unit, students will learn to identify forms of figurative language, such as simile, metaphor, and personification, and will develop a more imaginative style in their own writing. They will work in teams to create posters depicting examples of figurative language.
