Reflections by Staff, Friends ~
"I was very saddened to hear of Lee's death.
I remember her very well, and will never forget how bravely and
graciously she coped with being among all of us obnoxious boys
at SPS. She remained very sweet and delicate, but if she could
hold her own with us at SPS, she was obviously tough as well."
Classmate from St. Paul's
"I shared a classroom with Lee this year and
witnessed her gutsy determination and non-complaining nature in
dealing with her grave illness. She was an example for me on the
'way to die.' ...
The thing I admired most was her devotion to her students. There
was rarely a time when she was not sitting beside one teaching
or counseling them. I feel that her last mission was to mentor
and nurture her students. She loved her students at WFMS and teaching
them helped sustain her." Pam Gibboney
"I'll never forget Lee's tenacity and persistence."
Paulette Shockey
"Lee would walk up and down the stairs even
when she was out of breath and very tired. She always wanted to
make herself stronger. Lee was always looking out for the best
interest of the students. I admired her for being such a strong
person."
Jane Wolfinger
"Lee and I came to Frederick Public Schools
together--middle aged women, and new teachers on provisional certificates
who wanted to do something worthwhile with our days. We sat through
the same trainings, shared ideas, and griped about the same things.
I will always appreciate Lee's ability to see a situation in a
unique way, give an unpopular response that made people think,
go against the tide, and, above all, see the humor in everything,
including her own illness. I always wanted to sit next to Lee
in a meeting, because I could count on her to offer a pithy remark
or wry comment.
I think about her every time I walk into the building and she's
not here."
Judy Reilly
"It was a great privilege to have such a wonderful
friend. Lee had a way of cheering me up, even when she had every
reason to be down. She listened to others, and she thought carefully
about what they said. Lee was never satisfied to accept a situation,
especially if there was a chance that someone might be offended
or if justice was not served. Lee cared for each and every child
she taught. She was very intelligent, creative, and honest, and
had a unique sense of humor that will never be forgotten. I think
of Lee every day, and miss her very much." Celeste Ziniewicz
