Home Reading Journal Requirements

It is important that you form a habit of reading books of your choice each day. This will help you to develop new interests, strengthen your reading skills, and will help you become a better writer. The following assignment will provide an organized plan for you, and you will receive homework credit each week for your journal entries. You should read for at least twenty minutes each evening.

Please have a story (novel) available for your home reading journal and independent reading requirements.

Each week you are responsible for one journal entry based on the book you are reading at home during that week. Write the answer on the answer page provided. Journal pages will be collected every Friday.

Each entry should be approximately one-half page in length, and may be hand-written or typed. Be sure to complete all information required in the heading: Write your name and the date, the book title, author's name, and the pages you have read during the week.

To make sure that the journal entries for each week correspond to the objectives being addressed by all sixth grade language arts teachers, I will assign a journal topic at the beginning of each week. As you read on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, you should be taking notes and thinking of the topic you will write about on Thursday night. You will then be required to bring your journal entry and your book to class on Friday, and to turn in your journal entry for a homework grade.
